Your Grad School Brain Just Got a Turbo Button

How I turned years of HPT and instructional design coursework into Skills inside Claude CoWork that deliver real, polished, consultant-grade outputs on demand.

🎓 HPT & L&D 🤖 Claude CoWork ⚡ Immediate Value

Let me paint you a picture. It’s 7pm. A client just dropped a performance problem in your inbox that would normally take two days of structured analysis to properly diagnose. You have your frameworks in your head, your methodology locked in from years of graduate study, and a burning desire to deliver something brilliant. And tonight? You actually can.

That is the reality I am living right now, and I am absolutely buzzing about it.

I spent years in graduate school wrestling with Human Performance Technology theory, dissecting Gilbert’s Behavior Engineering Model, mapping interventions through the ISPI HPT Model, and building ADDIE-based design documents that could hold up in any client room. That expertise was real. The problem was that translating it into a deliverable still took time, energy, and a whole lot of setup every single time a new engagement landed on my desk.

Not anymore.

“I did not just teach Claude my frameworks. I encoded my entire professional methodology into a system that fires on demand, every single time.”

From Coursework to Capability: The Lightbulb Moment

Here is the thing nobody tells you when you are grinding through your master’s program: all of those papers, case studies, framework analyses, and design documents you produce? They are not just assignments. They are the raw material of a professional system. They represent your intellectual fingerprint on your field.

When I discovered that Claude CoWork lets you build custom Skills, a genuinely ridiculous amount of excitement hit me all at once. Because I realized: I do not have to keep that knowledge locked inside my head or buried in a Google Drive folder. I could encode it. I could make it repeatable, consistent, and scalable.

So I got to work building two Skills that have fundamentally changed how I deliver learning design solutions.

Skill 01
HPT Intervention Strategist
Runs a full cause analysis using Gilbert’s BEM and the ISPI HPT Model. Separates environmental from individual performance factors and recommends prioritized interventions, ranked by impact vs. effort.

Skill 02
ADDIE Chain Designer
Chains all four ADDIE phases into polished deliverables: Needs Analysis, Design Document, Development Checklist, and Kirkpatrick Evaluation Plan. All from a single project brief.

Why This Works: It is Not Just AI, It is Your AI

Generic AI tools are fine. You ask a question, you get an answer. But those answers do not know the difference between a knowledge gap and a motivation gap. They do not know to check for environmental obstacles before recommending training. They do not know that a well-structured Kirkpatrick Evaluation Plan looks wildly different from a generic assessment rubric.

Your Skills do. Because you built them. Because your graduate education is baked into every layer of the prompt strategy.

Here is the architecture that makes these Skills actually work:

  1. 1
Precision Inputs The Skill asks for exactly the right context, client org data, performance gap description, existing interventions, and environmental context. No fluff. No wasted prompting.
  2. 2
Layered Prompt Strategy Frameworks run first. Gilbert’s BEM categorizes the gap before any intervention is recommended. The ADDIE chain flows in sequence. The analysis follows your logic, not a generic AI default.
  3. 3
Output Scaffolding The documents that come out look like a seasoned HPT practitioner or instructional designer wrote them. Because, in every way that matters, one did.
The Real Unlock

The distance between “AI user” and “AI practitioner” has nothing to do with technical skill. It is about knowing how to translate your expertise into a system. And your graduate education? That is the most powerful expertise you could possibly encode.

What Immediate Value Actually Looks Like

I want to be specific here, because “immediate value” can sound like marketing language. So let me tell you what it looked like in practice.

A client described a situation where a team was underperforming after completing a training program. In the past, I would have scheduled a discovery call, built a cause analysis template, worked through the BEM framework manually, drafted an intervention recommendation, formatted the document, and delivered it a few days later.

With my HPT Intervention Strategist Skill, I described the situation, fed in the context, and received a structured cause analysis that correctly identified that the underperformance had nothing to do with knowledge gaps and everything to do with missing environmental supports, unclear performance expectations, and zero feedback mechanisms. The Skill surfaced non-training interventions as the priority recommendation, ranked by impact against effort.

That is graduate-level thinking, delivered at AI speed. And it did not sacrifice a single ounce of rigor to get there.

The ADDIE Chain Skill does the same thing for course design. Drop in a project brief and the Skill walks through the full instructional design process, generating a Needs Analysis, a Design Document, a Development Checklist, and a Kirkpatrick Evaluation Plan, each one structured and ready for client delivery or academic review.

Your Grad School Work Was Never Just Homework

If you are reading this and you have a master’s degree sitting in instructional design, HPT, organizational performance, or learning and development, I need you to hear this clearly: the work you did in those programs is worth so much more than you are currently getting out of it.

Every framework you internalized. Every case study you dissected. Every design document you built and rebuilt until it was right. That is the foundation of a system that can scale, that can deliver consistent quality, and that can represent your professional brand every single time a client walks in the door.

You just need to encode it.

Claude CoWork Skills are the vehicle. Your expertise is the fuel. And I am genuinely thrilled to tell you that the combination of those two things produces something that feels a little bit like a superpower.
